Cursive New York: Craftsmanship You Can Touch

Cursive New York is one of my favorite stores. Lucky me, the owners Michael Schultz and Douglas Duncan are two of my closest friends. I have known them for over fifteen years. Last winter, they approached MinkWell about creating a website. Pumped up on too much pizza and champagne, I started going off about what the e-commerce platforms MinkWell recommends, shopping cart functionality, etc. Mike brought me back to earth with this simple directive, “I just want a blog, social media, and be able to update the site myself”.

With this brief, MinkWell knew the site had to be visually stunning and simple to navigate. Rather than describe the process, I’d rather you take a look. I’m thrilled to debut their new site, Cursive New York. But before you click away, I had a few questions for Mike about what it’s like running a retail empire.

Your blog gives a peak behind the scenes at Cursive New York. Rather than show the “glamorous” side of retail, you offer a real world approach. Why?
I made a decision a long time ago to only be real and honest about my business. There are many other companies out there who show the “glamour”. It’s not interesting to me. I’ve been in this business a long time and I know too much!

Best part about running your own stores and being your own boss
Being able to set my own agenda, that’s by far the best perk of owning your own business.

Worst part?
Scheduling… of any kind, that’s the worst. There is always so much of it to do and I am not good at it. Luckily I have a partner who is really good at it and he keeps me on track.

You wear a bunch of different hats in your job. What does a “typical” day look like around your office and stores?
I spend the first hour of my day dealing with email and phone messages, most likely from my phone. Then it’s off to see each shop, I usually spend 1-2 hours at each place working with the staff on visuals and paperwork. Then I go to the office to take care of work I can only do physically in the office IE: access to files and computer programs kept there. And lastly we make deliveries to the shops.

Dinner parties happen a lot in this city. What is the best hostess gift you can bring to someone?
Coasters! They are a perfect host/ hostess gift. Bring humorous styles that can be used that evening, they are great conversation starters.

Why did you go with MinkWell to design your website?
I trust Minkwell! I know that they will do what they say they will do and I know they will do it in the most creative and technologically advanced way possible. Plus I’m in really good company working with Minkwell.

I want to know:
